Title of dataset | Raw CTD data and microstructure measurements for revisiting Thorpe scale analysis of diapycnal mixing in the Southern Ocean |
Narrative summary of dataset | The data set presented here is related to an article on revisiting Thorpe scale analysis in the Southern Ocean (submitted to GRL). The data enables the validation of a revised Thorpe scale analysis at 8 stations in the Southern Ocean: 1) 7 TurboMAP/CTD stations in Drake Passage in April 2009; 2) 1 TurboMAP/CTD station in the Kerguelen region in October 2011 Reference to be cited as: Young-Hyang Park, Isabelle Durand, Jae-Hak Lee, Christine Provost. Revisiting Thorpe scale analysis for accessing a relable diapycnal diffusivity in the Southern Ocean. Submitted to GRL Important Note: This submission has been initially submitted to SEAscieNtific Open data Edition (SEANOE) publication service and received the recorded DOI. The metadata elements have been further processed (refined) in EMODnet Ingestion Service in order to conform with the Data Submission Service specifications. |
Summary of processing methodology | 1) TurboMAP (Turbulence Ocean Microstructure Acquisition Profiler) is a free-falling profiler and measures, among other parameters, velocity shear (du/dz) at a rate of 256 samples per second, 256 Hz. 2) It was manufactured by Alec Electronics Company, Japan, which has been replaced by VMP, Canada 3) For the 2009 Drake Passage TurboMAP data, raw epsilon values are averaged in 5-m bins 4) For the 2011 Kerguelen TurboMAP data, raw epsilon values are averaged in 2-m bins Key reference: Wolk F., Yamazaki H., Seuront L, Leuck R.G. (2002). A new free-fall profiler for measuring biophysical microstructure. JAOT, 19, 780-793. 5) Raw CTD data from Sea-Bird Electronics SBE911plus are recorded in netCDF format, including information of the CTD fall speed, a key parameter in the revised Thorpe scale analysis. |
